RESPONSE TO WELCOME

Hanover Township, PA

June 22, 2018

As your Secretary it is indeed an honor and a pleasure to respond, on behalf of my brother and sister fire fighters and emergency personnel, to the welcome to this, our 2018 convention town.   It is an area seeped with history and a great future. Yes, indeed we are fortunate, for it is a welcoming town.  Each place is unique and the Hanover Township is no exception. The people are friendly and helpful and I am sure that you will find many interesting shops, restaurants and taverns in the area.

Hanover Township has hosted many other conventions. They hosted the 77th in 1980, the 84th in 1987, the 97th in 2000, the 99th in 2002 and now the 115th . Each time we were made welcome and had a great experience.

I must commend the Hanover Township Fire Department, for hosting this Annual Convention. They and especially their Committee have done a marvelous job of getting everything organized and in such a short time. We owe a debt of gratitude to those behind the scenes who make this all work.

I am sure we will all have another great convention here in Hanover Township. Again I thank you for your warm welcome and thank the Committee for their outstanding work.  As we are always reminded, we should treat this convention town just like our own. Ladies and gentlemen are always invited back. Again, thank you for such a warm welcome.

Dear friends and fellow firefighters,

One for the thumb, this year’s convention theme, and the number of times Hanover Township has hosted the Six County Convention. The first convention in Hanover Township 1980, then 1987, back in 2000, and 2002.

The 2017-18 year has flown by, with the change in the Death Benefit fund we have saved $5,100.00, this year we were not hit as bad as other years. I along with our Treasurer are trying to save money where we can and trying to stream line everything! This year we moved 19 members to life status a total of 147 NOW.

I have documented one program for the Walter Sawchak Fire Prevention Award which went to our Montour County Vice President and A Chief from Danville. This year we 9 courage Award 17 Valor awards and we inducted 3 into the Fire Chief Hall of Fame. I’m pleased to see the Herman Howard award go to a man that has put in hundreds of hours of work into this association.

I have to say thank you to Joe Simonovich for working with me to get everything paid, I also have to thank President Tarby for all his hard work.

Finally I just want to say how proud I am of the scholarship program and the hard work the volunteers did this year at our second ball to benefit the program.

In closing I want to thank all the officers and committee members for working hard to keep this association going!

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL ADDRESS – President Anthony Prushinski, Nanticoke, PA
(Deanna Force – 1st vice-president – Montour County to assume the Chair and run the motion through.)
To: The Officers and Members of The Six County Fireman’s Association

It is hard to believe how quickly the year has passed and that it’s time again for the Six County convention. I would like to thank the Lackawanna County companies (Crystal Fire Company No.1, Artisan Fire Company No.2, and William Walker Hose Company) for hosting and helping this year and wish them the best for a successful convention, also wish to congratulate all those who have received an award. I am looking forward to having a wonderful time, as I have never in all my years in Six County and the fire service been to a convention in Lackawanna County. I’m sure Mark Coons will be looking down and telling me to “Go Ahead … have another”. In looking back over the past year we have lost too many members to either death or non-payment of dues and I am hoping that we can soon see things turn around and have more new members come into the association than we are currently losing. We may need to build a better mouse trap! We still need host towns for future conventions!!! Great job by the Treasurer and crew in obtaining our tax ID status back! Also looking forward to having another Fireman’s’ ball to benefit the Mark Coon’s Scholarship fund which targets helping students to further their education and for them to become active within Six County in the years to come. To go to Wallington, NJ Holiday parade is another goal I would like to achieve. There have been so many people involved in promoting the organization forward I can only say Thank you for your tireless efforts! It has indeed been a great honor to have served this past year as President and look forward to continuing to be part of the Six County organization and help in whatever way I am able.

Respectfully Submitted,
Anthony Prushinski
Six County President

EXCITIVE COMMITTEE REPORT: (Richard Blosky, Chairman, Executive Committee)
Six County Firemen’s Association
Officers and Members, Delegates
Chairman Executive Committee
Annual Report 2017

I would like to thank President Tony Prushinski for another fine year of leadership of the association. He has moved ahead on new agendas which will have an impact on the future of the association for years to come. President Prushinski has taken bold steps to get the association moving ahead. This has not always been to the liking of all members, but it must be done if we are to stay in the business of the Six County Association in the future. All members must get on board and take a interest not just sit back and do nothing. This past year has been a challenge with all the by-law changes and getting new membership. The committees have changed and the jury is still out whether this is good or bad. . The new challenge for the executive committee is to deal with the loss of income due to the large amount in death benefits (around $14.000.00 a year). With the new by-law for death benfits approved at the 2016 convention this might slow down the bleeding from the bank accounts. The death benefits numbers are down for the past year. The Executive committee looks forward to the continuing the scholarship program within the Association. The Firemen”s Ball was held at the Bloomburg Fire Department in March for the scholarship fund and was attended very well for the first time and all had a good time see you next year. Other challenges for the committee are finding candidates for the vice-presidents position from the six counties, finding companies to host the convention and finding new members to step forward to take the vacancies on the standing committees. New in the coming years is the Hall of Fame Fire Chiefs awards (3) which will be talked about at this convention. Note this might be the last full convention for the next couple years since no applications for the coming years has been submitted. (KEEP LOOKING) As always, the general administrative duties were performed by the Chairman. I would like to thank the Crystal Fire Department for the hosting this convention. The committee is looking to have a good year in 2017/2018 for the Six-County Association.
It’s been a pleasure to serve as Chair of the Executive Committee for the past year.

COMBINED REPORTS OF THE SECRETARY AND THE TREASURER:
(by Gary J. Perna Jr., Secretary and Joseph Simonovich, Treasurer)

Dear friends and fellow firefighters,
It has been 46 years since the association has held a convention in Lackawanna County, The last time was in 1971 in Peckville. I was not even born yet (haha). In total we have been in Lackawanna County 6 times, in our 114 year history. We are gathering here in the memory of Mark Coons. Mark was working so hard to bring the convention back to Lackawanna County but never saw it. The 2016-17 year has flown by, with the change in the Death Benefit fund we have saved $1,885.00, this year we were not hit as bad as other years. I along with our Treasurer are trying to save money where we can and trying to stream line everything! This year we moved 17 members to life status a total of 143 NOW.
I have documented one program for the Walter Sawchak Fire Prevention Award which went to our membership Chairwoman and my wife Whitney Perna. This year we did not have any courage Award, but we did have 5 Valor awards and we inducted 2 into the Fire Chief Hall of Fame. I’m pleased to see the Herman Howard award go to a man that has put in hundreds of hours of work into this association. I have to say thank you to John Nilles for all the help and to Joe Simonovich for working with me to get everything paid! I have to say thank you as well to my wife for putting up with me and the long house yelling at the computer and trying to find stuff! Thank you honey! Finally I just want to say how proud I am of the scholarship program and the hard work the volunteers did this year at our first ball to benefit the program. In closing I want to thank all the officers and committee members for working hard to keep this association going!

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT: (William Tarby, Chairman, Scholarship Committee)
The committee has worked hard this year on the Mark Coons Memorial Scholarship Fund. At this convention, we have awarded 5 scholarships of $250.00 each. This year we had 12 applications to review and they were all winners. It was a very hard job to narrow it down to only 5.

This year the committee held its first Fireman’s Ball at the Bloomsburg Fire Company. It turned out to be a big success. Everyone had a great time and the food was very good. This will be the first of many that the committee will be holding. The plans are in the works for next year’s ball.

The committee has worked hard getting baskets for the raffle we have for the Mark Coons Scholarship Fund. The baskets will be raffled off after the convention parade on Saturday. As Chairman of the committee, I would like to thank everyone who has donated a basket or money to the fund. I would like to thank the committee for the great work they have done for this scholarship and all the work that they have put in this past year. I want to say thank you for everything you have done and will be doing to keep the Mark Coons Memorial Scholarship alive.

The committee has talked about other fund raisers to do in the future to help build the fund so we are able to award a larger scholarship in years to come but we can only do this with your help and donations.
